The 2025 NEXUS Australia Summit featured prominent speakers, key international guests, and dynamic members of the Australian NEXUS community.

Guy Sebastian & Jules Sebastian

Founders, The Sebastian Foundation

  • Guy and Jules Sebastian live their life in the public eye; one is a multiple ARIA award-winning singer, songwriter and TV personality, and the other a fashion and lifestyle guru and sought-after speaker and brand ambassador. But behind the scenes are two loving parents and philanthropists who simply want their children, and all Australian children, to thrive in this increasingly challenging world.

    In 2013 they set up The Sebastian Foundation to help give young Australians the resilience and confidence they need to grow and be their best. The foundation funds schools to implement a unique in-school wellbeing program called Open Parachute, teaching kids the mental skills they need to cope with the many challenges they’ll face, through adolescence and beyond. To date, The Sebastian Foundation has supported over 210,000 Australian students from 235 primary and high schools. Feedback from teachers and families shows the program is working, and the demand is growing.

Larissa Baldwin-Roberts

  • Larissa Baldwin-Roberts is a distinguished global leader in climate activism and First Nations justice. A proud Widjabul Wia-bal woman from the Bundjalung Nation. Larissa has deep-rooted connections to her country and heritage. Raised in a family of political activists, she has been involved in the fight for land rights, Indigenous Rights, climate justice, and cultural heritage from an early age. This upbringing has enabled Larissa to build enduring relationships within First Nations communities and across civil society in Australia and Globally. Larissa was the CEO of GetUp, making her the first Aboriginal woman to lead a major political organisation in Australia. GetUp is an Independent movement of over one million people dedicated to reinvigorating public engagement in politics and winning progressive change across the issues of Climate, First Nations Justice, Economic reform and Human Rights. She is also the Director of Research for Passing the Message Stick, a groundbreaking multi-year First Nations-led research project designed to shift public narrative in support of First Nations justice and self-determination. Larissa co-founded and led Indigenous organisations Common Threads, an organisation that is transforming the capability of First Nations social movements to usher in a decade to winning positive change. And Seed, Australia’s first Indigenous youth climate network, a platform that has catapulted hundreds of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on the frontlines of climate impacts to protect country and put First Nations communities at the forefront of the fight for Climate Justice. Larissa is also a current board member of Climate Action Network International. She’s most passionate about travelling around the country and crafting winning campaigns and power building strategies with Indigenous communities that gain tangible policy outcomes on the issues our communities face.

  • With over 20 years of experience transforming young lives through the power of music, Dominic Brook is a visionary changemaker dedicated to creating lasting impact. As the co-founder of Musicians Making A Difference (MMAD), he has built a national movement that uses music, mentoring, and community to break cycles of disadvantage and empower at-risk youth. Through MMAD, Dominic has provided thousands of young people with a platform to find their voice, heal from trauma, and rewrite their futures.   • Ben Vasiliou is a social entrepreneur and the new CEO of The Man Cave, Australia’s leading preventative mental health charity for teenage boys and their communities.

    Ben is a champion of social justice, is passionate about helping young boys become great men, and has an insatiable appetite to change the world.

    Ben is a seasoned CEO, has held a number of non-executive director positions with Australian charities and is a Victorian Justice of the Peace.

    Ben was named Innovator of the Year and One of The Top 25 most influential and inspiring people in the social economy in 2020, by Pro Bono Australia. He was named in the Top 5 CEOs of 2021 by Third Sector and Scholar of the Year in 2023 by the Australian Leadership Hub. Ben's graduated from the Executive Education in Social Entrepreneurship Program at Stanford University.

 

Marlee Silva

  • Marlee Silva is one of the brightest stars on the Australian media landscape since being afforded an opportunity to host across the Nine Network's NRLW coverage and also contribute to Today Show and Nine Digital.
    Silva was also recently announced as part of The Nine Network's Australian Open coverage.
    She began her career in the non-profit sector, where her path was shifted toward a more public profile when she was employed as the Co-CEO of Aboriginal education charity AIME Mentoring. A role which saw her shadow the work of AIME’s CEO for twelve months and in turn, act as the representative of the organisation's story and direction, in the media and through keynote speaking.
    Since then, Marlee has continued to emerge as a skilled public speaker and presenter. After publishing her first book 'My Tidda, My Sister: Stories of strength and resilience from Australia's first women' in 2020, Marlee continued to expand her media reach with successful appearances.
    Marlee is determined to utilise her storytelling skills to inspire people and create change and uses her platform to advocate for the causes she is most passionate about, which has previously seen her named as a finalist in the Australian Human Rights Commission 'Young People's Human Rights Medal' in 2019. O
    She also has a passion for sports, rapidly becoming one of the countries leading voices on women’s sport, particularly Rugby League. Marlee recently travelled over to the UK for the Rugby League World Cup, where she interviewed participants, giving an insight into the reach and impact of the sport.
    Marlee also volunteers for various charities and sits on the board of both ID. Know Yourself, an Aboriginal founded charity which provides support to Indigenous children living in out of home care, and youth suicide prevention non-profit, Cultural Choice Association, through which she has also developed and delivered mental health and wellbeing program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students.

Dr Catherine Ball

  • Associate Professor, Dr Catherine Ball is an academic, company director, bestselling author, futurist and visioneer working across global projects where emerging technologies meet humanitarian, education and environmental needs.

    Having been called a ‘social architect’, Catherine also likes to create businesses and champion movements, search for unicorns, collaborate with peers, and advise current and future game-changers.

    A champion of diversity and inclusion, Catherine believes we need points of difference to truly innovate and curate the changes we want to see in the world. Working to protect the natural environment and empowering all members of society through mutual education and respect are core aspects of her chosen projects. As well as supporting Australian start-ups and leaders from all generations; Catherine is particularly passionate about social mobility and equity.

    Catherine is proud to be an advisor to a broad range of enterprises and philanthropic organisations; i.e. an international advisory board member for the Schmidt Ocean Institute, and an XPRIZE visioneer and member of their Global Brains Trust.

    Catherine’s latest business ventures span angel investments and advisory across the broad emerging technology sector, from insect protein to personalised brain health through AI and neuroscience. Her internationally recognised work on drones and robotics community engagement via the World of Drones and Robotics Global Congress continues and is evolving. Catherine is also proud to be a member of Australia’s Robotics Advisory Council.

    Catherine holds a BSc Honours (Environmental Protection), a PhD (Spatial Ecology, Descriptive and Predictive Statistics) both from the University of Newcastle- upon-Tyne in the UK, and recently was awarded a DSc (Doctor of Science Honoris Causa) from Worcester Polytechnic in Massachusetts, USA.

Rueben Berg

  • Rueben sits on the Assembly representing the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation
    – a Traditional Owner group of south-western Victoria. The Country and Waters
    of the Eastern Maar stretch to Ararat and encompass Warrnambool, Port Fairy
    and areas of the Great Ocean Road. Rueben has strong connections to Thangang poonart (Hopkins Falls) and the Framlingham Aboriginal community.
    As an elected Co-Chair of the Assembly, Rueben plays a pivotal role in representing
    the diverse voices and aspirations of First Nations communities in Victoria. With a deep
    commitment to advancing the rights and interests of First Nations people, Rueben is
    passionate about ensuring Treaty delivers Aboriginal communities the power and tools
    to develop and deliver practical solutions at a local level.
    Rueben’s leadership and dedication have earned him widespread recognition
    and respect within First Nations communities and beyond. He is known for his
    ability to build bridges between different stakeholders, fostering collaboration and
    understanding of complex topics. As a Member of the Assembly in its inaugural term,
    from 2019-2023, Rueben spent a considerable amount of time contributing to the
    design and negotiation of the Treaty Negotiation Framework, and taking a leading role
    in the negotiation meetings with the State.
    Rueben was previously an appointed member of the Heritage Council of Victoria;
    an independent body which advises the government and others on how to protect
    historically important places and objects for the enjoyment of future generations.
    A trained architect, Rueben was a Founder and Director of Indigenous Architecture
    and Design Victoria, Managing Director of RJHB Consulting and was the Chairperson
    of Westernport Water. Rueben is the first Aboriginal person to be appointed as Chair
    of a water corporation in Victoria. He was also a Commissioner for the Victorian
    Environmental Water Holder, before being elected to drive the Assembly’s work
    as Co-Chair.

  • Debbie Dadon currently serves as the Chair of The Besen Family Foundation which was established in 1978 to build on the philanthropic endeavours of her parents, Eva and Marc Besen. This tradition of giving has evolved across four Program Areas: Arts & Culture, Jewish Community & Israel, Early Childhood Development and Environment. Prior to the holding the position of Chair, Debbie served as the Chief Executive Officer and Trustee of the Besen Family Foundation (BFF) for 20 years which allowed her to develop an acute and insightful awareness of the issues and needs of communities, both local and global. Debbie’s philanthropic leadership has been particularly evident in the areas of intergenerational philanthropy and disability. A significant part of Debbie’s mentorship role in the BFF has been the sensitive task of nurturing the involvement of the third generation of the Besen family in philanthropy. Debbie’s commitment and contribution to the community is evidenced through her involvement in many organisations. The Australian Jewish Funders (AJF) is an organisation specifically aimed at inspiring effective philanthropy and strengthening community. A Founding Member of the AJF, Debbie held the position of Chair for 10 years. Tikkun Olam Makers (TOM), founded in Israel, is a global movement of communities connecting makers, designers, developers and engineers with people with disabilities to develop technological solutions for everyday challenges. Debbie saw such potential with TOM as a unique social impact movement, to change the quality of life for people living with disability in Australia that she started developing the TOM community in Melbourne in 2016.

 

Sam Elsom

  • Sam Elsom was named 2025 TAS Australian of The Year for his work as a passionate environmentalist and eco-entrepreneur with over 20 years’ driving innovation in sustainability. Elsom is pioneering the development of a new and environmentally positive seaweed industry in Australia as founder and CEO of Sea Forest (Ltd), an innovative environmental technology company founded in 2018. The company is focussed on the scaled cultivation of the red seaweed, Asparagopsis and the development of methane mitigating livestock feed supplements which when included in very low quantities, reduces the production of methane in ruminants such as cattle and sheep by over 90% and is the most prospective tool for Australia’s agriculture industry to reach its carbon neutral target by 2030. Sea Forest is set to make a significant impact on methane emissions reduction from livestock and dairy production with capacity to reduce over 10 million tonnes of CO2-e from its operations in Tasmania.

    Sea Forest was a 2023 finalist in Sir David Attenborough and Prince William’s Earthshot prize and listed as one of the world’s most innovative companies of 2024 by Fast Company.

Michelle Lin

  • Michelle is a Management Consultant by trade and CEO of her family foundation, Vermilion Foundation, which supports the areas of Diversity and Inclusion, Mental Health and Climate Action. She is very passionate about New Gen philanthropy and shifting capital towards purpose, and is a member of Philanthropy Australia’s New Gen Network Committee. A champion for diversity from a gender, minority and disability lens, she has many passions including multicultural youth empowerment, increasing representation of women of colour in leadership roles and youth mental health.

Jackie Turner

Director, Trans Justice Project

  • Growing up on Jagera/Turrbal Country in Meanjin [Brisbane] Jackie is passionate about community power, developing the leadership of trans and gender diverse people, and building movements that can win. She is the Director of Trans Justice Project, the first trans-led national campaigning organisation. Their mission is to build a powerful, trans-led movement standing up for freedom, justice, and equality for all trans and gender diverse people. In the two years since the launch of the Trans Justice Project they have released the Fuelling Hate report - the largest investigation into anti-trans hate in Australia, led the Protect Trans Youth Day of Action - a national day of action to call on the Queensland government to reinstate trans youth health care, and are now forming local groups around the country - supporting people to organise for trans justice in their own communities. Over the last 12 years as an organiser and campaigner Jackie has led national mobilisations, trained and mentored hundreds of volunteers, and run campaigns across movements for climate and economic justice. She is now working to build a future where all trans and gender diverse people are safe, celebrated and free.

Tania Austin

Amanda McKenzie

  • Amanda McKenzie is a leading Australian climate advocate and co-founder of the Climate Council, which she has led as CEO since 2013. Under her leadership, the Council has become a powerful and trusted voice on climate action driving campaigns to change public opinion and national and state policy. She previously co-founded the Australian Youth Climate Coalition and has advised numerous governments and corporations on climate and energy. Amanda’s governance experience includes founding Chair of the Centre for Australian Progress and director roles at Plan International. Anna Brown OAM

  • Anna Brown’s fingerprints are on nearly every major reform for LGBTIQ+ people in recent years. She played a critical role in the campaign for marriage equality co-chairing the Equality Campaign. Anthea Roberts

  • Damon Gameau is an Australian actor, director, and producer, known for his documentaries That Sugar Film and 2040. Daniel Flynn

  • Determined and resourceful, Daniel Flynn is the co-founder and managing director of one of Australia’s most successful startups, Thankyou.

    He co-founded Thankyou at the age of 19, and today 12 years later, Thankyou’s products are stocked by major retailers in Australia, with every product contributing to helping end global poverty. To date, Thankyou has raised over $17 million to impact the lives of people across 22 countries.

    Daniel is also the author of best-selling book Chapter One, a story that generated $1.4 million in sales in its first month using an unorthodox ‘pay-what-you-want’ model. He is known for his disruptive marketing and has received widespread media coverage for some truly unconventional and highly successful campaigns that led to Thankyou products being stocked by some of Australia’s biggest retailers.

    Daniel’s achievements as an entrepreneur have also been widely celebrated. In 2014, he was named an honoree in JCI’s Ten Outstanding Young People of the World, and in 2015 Daniel won EY Entrepreneur of the Year (for the Southern Region). In 2016 Daniel was named in the Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 for Social Entrepreneurship.

His tireless efforts are geared towards making a positive impact on sustainability and responsible business practices, shaping a brighter future. Jeffry is a dedicated advocate for climate change awareness and environmental preservation. Within NEXUS Indonesia, he plays a pivotal role in fostering a green ethos, emphasizing the importance of Earth’s care and supporting ecosystems. Jeffry passionately believes that collective efforts are essential for a sustainable future.

Gill Hicks AM MBE

Creative Director, MAD Music Art Discussions

  • Hicks is a powerful, life-affirming, and memorable speaker whose life symbolizes transformative possibilities, impacting and inspiring audiences worldwide. Despite enduring permanent injury and losing both legs in the 2005 London terrorist bombings, she vowed to Do More than Survive and devote her efforts to communicating the wonder and awe of the Human spirit.

    Through her groundbreaking work, The Fragile Project, Hicks explores a position that transcends traditional concepts of resilience, encouraging a fundamental shift in how we approach change. Rather than merely surviving adversity, she advocates for becoming Agile within a Fragile existence – accepting change as an omnipresent part of life's journey.

    Drawing from 20 years of lived experience, Hicks has developed a transformative methodology. This powerful framework goes beyond conventional resilience, offering a practical approach to finding opportunity within adversity and flexibility within change.     Michael Baulch,

    Awarded and recognised with doctorates from London Metropolitan, Kingston and the University of South Australia, an MBE and AM, Gill brings her experience from a respected and expansive UK career within Design and the Arts to champion critical thinking, particularly within the areas of violent extremism. 

Josh Tickell

Director and Producer

  • The author of four books, Josh Tickell has worked on environmental issues for over twenty years. His career spans a unique mixture of science, journalism and filmmaking. His directorial debut film, FUEL, is the 2008 Sundance Audience Award winning documentary that investigates the possible replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy. His 2017 Simon and Schuster book, Kiss the Ground, How the Food You Eat Can Reverse Climate Change, Heal Your Body and Ultimately Save Our World, was an Amazon Bestseller in multiple categories. Tickell holds an MFA in film from Florida State University’s Film School. He is a regular guest on talk shows and gives keynote presentations internationally on sustainability, regeneration and filmmaking.

Lucy Steggles

Executive Officer, NEXUS Australia

  • Lucy is the Executive Officer of NEXUS Australia and a member of the NEXUS Global Mental Health Council, having been involved with NEXUS since 2015. Lucy has been a delegate and speaker at several NEXUS Global Summits, including as an official delegate to the United Nations Population Fund brains trust on Youth Creating a Resilient World. Passionate about philanthropy and social entrepreneurship, Lucy has used her time and skills to passionately drive social change. After working in professional services for 13 years both within Australia and the UK, in 2019 Lucy moved into not-for-profit and sits on the executive leadership team at youth mental health organisation, batyr. Lucy has been an active member of Philanthropy Australia’s Next Generation of Giving Program since 2014, and is also involved in her families philanthropic giving.

 

Matt Leggett

  • Matt is a leader in conservation and climate finance, with over 20 years of experience designing unique strategies to protect and restore the world’s most biodiverse tropical forests and ecosystems. He has championed innovative, market-driven solutions that not only drive conservation but also unlock economic value and empower communities at scale. As the founder and CEO of Terratai, Matt is at the forefront of transforming nature finance by blending catalytic philanthropy with private capital to de-risk and accelerate investment into high-impact early-stage ventures tackling nature and biodiversity loss. Shatha Hamade

  • Shatha Hamade is Legal Counsel and Lead Investigator for Animals Australia and Animals International. She is a trained covert investigator and has conducted investigations internationally for over a decade.     As a board member of Seed mob Corey has been leading the fight for climate justice for Indigenous peoples across the Nation. Corey was instrumental in developing Science Technology Australia’s first RAP to further encourage participation and inclusion of First Nations peoples in STEM.
