Climate Future

Clare Ainsworth Herschell (Co-Founder, Groundswell Giving)
Edwina Floch (Committee, NEXUS Aus.)

4.89 million Australians have been identified as feeling alarmed about the climate crisis, yet many haven’t yet taken action, and report feelings of frustration, uncertainty and helplessness. Groundswell Giving is here to turn this around. We know that the antidote to despair is action. Our team will spend the hour offering you hope and courage to tackle the crisis in innovative ways that harness the giving currencies of time, treasure, talent, ties, testimony and more. Encouragingly, over 2 million Australians also express openness to donating to a climate change organisation or charity - which is something Groundswell Giving is also working to shift the dial on. Currently, just 2.5% of all philanthropic giving goes into environmental giving (and an even smaller portion of that goes into climate) - given the scale of the challenge the climate crisis presents the planet and all of humanity, this is woeful. To give hope, Groundswell will share some of the most exciting people and organisations we’ve come across doing high impact work in climate action that our giving circle has funded. You’ll walk away feeling empowered to make your contribution, big or small, to the climate crisis.

Linking Our Purpose with Parliament: Improving Democracy Through Representation

Licia Heath (CEO, Women for Election Aus.)
Sasha Hoffman (Committee, NEXUS Aus.)

Our challenge is to reach 2000 women by 2022 to inspire and equip them to run for public office. In this session we'll explore how increasing gender and cultural diversity in Australia's parliamentary chambers will result in movement on the policies so desperately needed in Australia such as climate reform, first nations justice, childcare and domestic violence solutions and more. Help us 'change the faces in Parliament' so that Australian policies and legislation reflect the voice and the needs of 100% of our population.

Brains Trust

Philanthropy Blueprint

Jon Myer (Associate Director, Orygen Digital)
Georgia Mathews (Committee, NEXUS Aus.)

How can we supercharge Australia’s culture of giving over the next decade? Over the next two decades, $2.4 trillion is expected to transfer between baby boomers and their children, marking an unprecedented opportunity to grow philanthropy in Australia. To capitalise on this opportunity, Philanthropy Australia is partnering with Social Ventures Australia to design a Blueprint to grow giving in Australia over the next decade. A critical part of the philanthropic landscape is the next generation of givers. We want to understand what NEXUS members see as the barriers and opportunities to grow giving, and get their insights and ideas to guide the development of the Blueprint. During this workshop, participants will be asked to brainstorm what they believe is currently stopping young Australians from giving, and what new ideas can be introduced to incentivise them to give more.

At the time, the org was celebrating a ten-year birthday as a youth driven social enterprise that was tackling bullying in schools around the country. What started as a small anti-bullying community project by two young sisters, fresh out of school in 2006 had grown into Australia's youth driven movement against bullying, hate and prejudice, impacting half a million young Aussies. Join this session for a unique opportunity to collectively address the issues of bullying, and reflect on the challenges and opportunities along the way.

Food: The Key to Solving Our Climate Crisis

Thomas King (Founder, Food Frontier)
Rachel Howard (Committee, NEXUS Aus.)

Agriculture is the second biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Australia following fossil fuels – and livestock accounts for a staggering 73% of these emissions. So with Australian producers looking to expand production to meet the growing demand of Asia's rising middle class, how does that present us with one of the biggest opportunities to combat climate change? And does what we eat for dinner really matter in the scheme of our planet's future? Walk away from this session with a clear understanding of the climate challenges posed by society’s heavy reliance on traditional protein production; the exciting innovations being pioneered in plant proteins and cellular agriculture; and three key actions that you can take to be part of the solution.
